Many years ago, with some naivety I asked a German who
had been a German rider in WWII and if in his own estimation could he explain
why so many horrendous events occurred in the War. He answered "You must
remember, we lived under a dictatorship’ if we didn’t obey we would be shot.”
From a military point of view this makes sense. From a personal point of view
this book examines those that were responsible for the mistreatment of
individuals and groups and those that took a chance to fight back, while
lives of many hung in the balance.
The book considers the plight of the people, Church versus State. The
courage of individuals. The callousness of governments. The military,
judicial and other groups that were indifferent to the suffering of ordinary
people.
